Buying on Downswing
Find the right club, read the listing like a pro, pay safely and know exactly what happens if something goes wrong.
1. Find the right club
Start from a category, a brand or the search bar. Every listing is tagged with the specs that matter, so you can filter by dexterity, shaft flex, condition and price instead of scrolling. On club pages you will also see loft, shaft model, length and grip.
- Left-handed? Filter by dexterity first. LH listings are badged on every card.
- Not sure which flex? As a rough guide: driver swing speed under 85 mph, Senior or Regular; 85 to 95, Regular; 95 to 105, Stiff; over 105, X-Stiff. A fitting beats a rule of thumb.
- Watch a listing with the heart icon to get notified of price drops, and to find it again later.
2. Read the listing
Three things tell you almost everything about a used club:
- The condition grade. We use one seven-point scale across the site, from Brand New to For Parts. The seller picks the grade and is accountable for it. See the condition guide for what each grade allows.
- The photos. Look for the face (grooves and wear pattern), the sole, the crown (sky marks on woods), the grip and the shaft band. A listing with only a glamour shot of the head is a listing to message about.
- The price guide panel. Club listings tied to a known model show the average sale price for that condition. A price far below the guide is not automatically a scam, but it deserves a question.
Then check the seller: rating, number of sales, ships-from location and return policy are on every listing. New sellers are fine; new sellers with a $150 Scotty Cameron and no photos of the face are not.
3. Make an offer, or buy it now
Most listings accept offers. An offer is binding for 48 hours: if the seller accepts, you are expected to complete checkout. Sellers can accept, decline or counter. If a listing also accepts trades, you can include a club of your own plus cash; see trades.
Offers within 10 to 15% of the asking price get accepted most of the time. Offers at half price get declined and usually ignored after that.
4. Pay safely
Checkout runs through our payment processor; sellers never see your card. Your payment is held until the seller marks the item shipped with tracking. Never pay a seller off-site, by bank transfer or on another app. Anyone asking you to is breaking our rules and you lose buyer protection the moment you do.
5. Delivery and after
- Sellers must ship within 3 business days of payment. You get tracking in your order and by email.
- Inspect the club when it arrives, ideally the same day. Compare it to the photos and the condition grade.
- Happy? Leave a review. Reviews are what make the next buyer’s decision easier.
- Not as described, damaged or missing? You have 3 days from delivery to open a case from the order page. Buyer protection explains what happens next.
Returns
Some sellers accept returns on a change of mind; the listing shows the return window if they do. Where they don’t, a club that is simply not for you is not a buyer-protection case, but it will sell again easily on Downswing. Clubs that aren’t as described are always covered regardless of the seller’s policy.
