Selling on Downswing
From closet to sold in five steps. Listing is free; you pay a flat fee only when it sells.
Before you start
- Set up your shop. A name, a location and a payout account. Payouts go through our payment partner; connecting takes a few minutes and you only do it once.
- Clean the club. Warm water, a soft brush on the grooves, a dry towel. Don’t polish a raw wedge or use anything abrasive on a painted crown.
- Know what you have. Model, year, loft, shaft and flex are usually printed on the head, the shaft band or the adapter. If the shaft band is missing, say so.
Step 1: Pick the model
Start typing the brand and model and choose it from the list. Choosing a known model does three things: it pre-fills the specs, it ties your listing to the price guide, and it puts your club in front of buyers watching that model. If the model isn’t listed, enter it manually and we will add it to the catalog.
Step 2: Photos
Photos sell clubs. Natural light, a plain background and a phone are all you need. Shoot these, in this order:
- 1. Hero shot
- The whole club at address from behind the ball, or the head at 45°. This is the thumbnail.
- 2. Face
- Straight on, close enough to read the grooves. This is the photo buyers care about most.
- 3. Sole
- Shows bounce wear on wedges, scratches on woods and the loft / model stamp.
- 4. Crown / top line
- Any sky marks, chips or idents live here. Shoot it even if it’s clean, so buyers know it’s clean.
- 5. Shaft band and grip
- Confirms the shaft model and flex; shows grip wear. Include the adapter setting on adjustable drivers.
- 6. Any flaw, close up
- Dings, rust, dents, cracked ferrules. One honest photo of a flaw prevents a return.
- 7. Headcover and extras
- Headcover, wrench, extra weights, box. Mention anything missing in the description.
For iron sets, add one photo of all the faces fanned out and one of all the soles. For putters, add the face insert and the alignment line from the player’s view.
Step 3: Condition and description
Grade it on our scale, not optimistically. Buyers can open a case if a club arrives in worse shape than the grade allows, and an honest Good sells faster than a contested Excellent. The condition guide spells out each grade with golf-specific examples.
In the description, cover what the photos can’t:
- How many rounds or range sessions it has seen, if you know.
- Any work done: re-gripped, re-shafted, loft or lie adjusted, bent, lengthened.
- Why you are selling. Buyers read this and it builds trust.
- For iron sets, the exact makeup (e.g. 5–PW + AW) and whether lofts are standard.
Step 4: Price it with the guide
When your listing is tied to a known model, the sell form shows the price guide beside the price box: the 12-month average for the condition you chose, plus the low and high. It is built from completed sales on Downswing, not asking prices, so it is the most honest read you will find.
- Within 5% of the average for your condition: usually sells within a week.
- 10 to 15% above the average: fine if your photos are excellent and you accept offers. Expect offers at the average.
- Well below the average: you will sell in hours and buyers will assume something is wrong. Add a line explaining why.
Turn on Accept offers unless you have a firm number, and set a minimum so lowball offers are declined automatically. If you would consider a swap, turn on Accept trades and say what you are after; see how trades work.
Step 5: Ship and get paid
- When your item sells you get an email and a notification. Payment is held on your behalf.
- Ship within 3 business days, with tracking. Our packing guide covers iron sets, drivers, putters and bags.
- Add the tracking number to the order. The buyer is notified automatically.
- When the carrier shows delivery and the 3-day inspection window passes, the payout is released to your account. See fees for the exact math.
Good to know
- Promote a listing. Bumping puts your listing at the top of its category. You pay a small extra percentage only if it sells while bumped.
- Price drops notify everyone watching the listing. It is the single most effective nudge for a listing that has stalled.
- Keep it on-site. Arranging payment outside Downswing voids protection for both sides and gets listings removed.
- Local pickup is available for bags, carts and complete sets. Mark the order paid-in-person only after you have the cash.
